We’ve reimagined what an eye care experience can be

Dr. Mark Bowers began his career as an optometrist in his hometown of Elizabethton in 2002, working for his childhood optometrist, Dr. David Mills.

However, his wife, Amanda Bowers, the local Food City Pharmacist in Blountville, quickly noticed that Blountville lacked an eye doctor. After much prayer and discussion, they decided to open their private optometric practice in Blountville, TN. On September 1, 2004, Dr. Mark Bowers opened the doors to Blountville Family Eyecare at 1323 Hwy 394; a decision he and his wife have never regretted.

The Blountville community has become home to the Bowers’ family, and the growth of the practice has been a tremendous blessing to their family, the families of their employees, and the community.

In the early days, Dr. Bowers was delighted to find a great rental space for his one-person show and one employee. Dr. Bowers’ vision has always been to offer his patients the best in technology, service, and eyewear, and it wasn’t long before we ran out of space.

Then, in 2009, the office space next door became available, and we could expand it to double our original square footage. In 2012, Dr. Tara Rathbun joined our team, offering much-needed additional care and help to the staff and community.

After years of thoughtful planning, Destination Eyecare opened its new location in August 2021 — a space designed to reflect the same care, clarity, and calm we bring to every patient interaction. Nestled at 2554 Highway 394 in Blountville, our new facility offers a modern, airy environment built to feel as relaxed as it is refined.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice the difference — from the curated frame collections in our expanded optical, to the dedicated sunglass gallery and boutique-style eyewear displays. With nearly 1,000 frames and a growing selection of independent and specialty lines, our new space makes the eyewear experience feel as personal and elevated as the care that supports it.

We’ve also expanded our diagnostic and exam areas to support advanced technology and more personalized appointments. With four additional exam rooms and dedicated space for specialty testing, we’re able to deliver a more seamless, comfortable experience — all while staying at the forefront of modern eye care.
