Medical Insurance vs. Vision Insurance
Many patients assume vision insurance only covers eye care, but that’s not always the case. Understanding the difference can help ensure you get the care you need.
Medical Insurance
Medical insurance is typically used when your visit involves a diagnosed eye condition, injury, or a health issue that affects your vision.
This may include eye exams related to diabetes, glaucoma evaluations, dry eye diagnosis and treatment, sudden vision changes, or infections and allergies that require medical attention.
Vision Insurance
Vision plans are designed to cover routine eye care, including comprehensive exams for glasses or contact lenses, as well as prescription eyewear such as frames and lenses. These benefits help support your everyday vision needs and make it easier to maintain clear, comfortable sight.
Vision Insurance vs. Medical Insurance–What’s Covered?
Your vision and medical insurance may cover different aspects of your eye care. Understanding the difference ensures that you use the right benefits for your needs.

Medical
Medical insurance applies to eye care services related to diseases, injuries, or ongoing eye health conditions.

How to Use Your HSA & FSA for Eye Care
Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) allow you to use pre-tax funds for eligible vision and medical eye care expenses.
Eligible HSA/FSA Expenses Include:
- Prescription glasses and sunglasses
- Contact lenses and solutions
- Eye exams and medical eye care visits
- Dry eye treatments and specialty contact lenses
FSA funds often expire at the end of the year, so be sure to use them before they are gone.
